Installing Linux on a Virtual Machine

Asked by EdWh

I have installed in Windows XP, using wmware server download, ver. 1.0.3, the Feisty 7.04 system. Using instructins from Matt Vapors Blog of May 2nd, at http://blog.clickonline.org.au/2007/05/02/. All installed well but in order to get it to work properly I have to install the VMware tools. As instructed from the Feisty desktop, I loaded the vmware tools which put a cdrom on my desktop. The files in the cdrom icon on my desktop show, a vmware tools, ver. 1.03. tar.gz. and a vmware tool, rpm file. (Note. I installed, Feisty using the vmware regular software and the server software installs, Feisty almost as well as a full seperate machine, the regular software is not comparable to the server).

The instructions from the blog, tell me to type. tar -xvf/media/cdrom0/*.tar.gz ~/vm. At the end of the string is a capital A with what apprears to be a hat over the top. similiar to the hat in upper case over the numerial 6. I do not have this character on my keyboard so I cut and pasted the command into termnal and ran it and it could not open the file.
I apprears it is ment to untar the file load the cdrom0 and creae a directory of vm on my desktop.

After it is run I am to change to the vm directory and in terminal type, sudo ./vmware-install.pl. Which will complete the install.

The tools are necessary as they help control the mouse, desktop resolutions, etc and the system hardly runs without them. If I can get this to work, I can teach others here in this area (upstate New York) to run Feisty from within windows to save, dual booting and partitioning.
I have Feisty 7.04 installed on this machine as a dual boot using half the hdd and it works well but difficult for newbies to configure.

I sent a email to Matt but have received no reply as yet, over a week ago. Please remember I am in learning stage myself as only been using Ubuntu since Dec. 2006. Help will be appreciated. Ed.

Thanks for the question.

The character looks like a mistake and is not necessary.

tar -xvf/media/cdrom0/*.tar.gz ~/vm

is the correct command

I hope this helps

Hi Ralph-

Thanks for the reply, I ran the command without the character last week and it would not load. Receive error as "No such file or drectory"
I also made a directory under ~/ as vm and ran and still comes up with "No such file or directory". My email which I forgot in post is - <email address hidden>.

I have no idea what is wrong. I downloaded the vmware -pdf for installation and it contains info to install tools but they are clear as mud, and I doubt vm will help as I am end user, you know how it is!! Thanks again. EdWh (Ed)

When do you get this error? Which command are you executing?

Am I wrong or tar do not support wobbling (unless so directed)?
If so I guess the problem is /media/cdrom0/*.tar.gz not ~/vm

Ops, I meant globbing, not wobbling :)

You mean you expanded the * to the appropriate filename?

Do you have the cd with the files in the cdrom drive and mounted? Or did you save the files somewhere?

It says:

>Once it has finished click ‘Restart Now’.
>
>When prompted press enter to reboot. Once your VM reboots press the red stop button, go to VM -> settings… then go to CD-rom >and change your cd to physical drive. This will stop your VM from booting from the ISO image again.
>
>When you are ready press the green play button and boot into your new Ubuntu VM.
>
>Once you have booted into Ubuntu, log in, and then go to VM -> Install VMware Tools. This will mount a cd on your desktop. Now >you will want to open a terminal window in Ubuntu. You can do this by going to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.

Did you do that before?

Hi Ralph,

I loaded the Feisty from a burned cd from a ISO I had. Did not use the ISO although I still have one not burned on my WinXP desktop. But installation gave me option to install from cd so did that so as not to have to do the change back from ISO to physical cd. Other than that I followed all the instructions. I am writing you from the installed Feisty in the VMware server software. I can and have installed the the vm tools and it put a cdrom on my desktop .
No did not save any files and have not been using Feisty cd since I completed the install.

Hi Ralph,

While waiting for reply, I put the feisty 7.04 in the cdrom drive and rebooted and then from feisty desktop I installed the vmware tools, which put a cdrom on my desktop and the cd is in the physical drive "E" in WinXP. I right clicked on the cdrom icon on the desktop and it shows it is a ISO cdrom, I ran the command again and it still came up with no such file or directory.
I suppose I can uninstall the whole thing and try again but I am not sure at this point on how to do that correctly. Will hold all until you come back. Thanks.

I still am having the problem with this software. The string command appears to be o.k. but report on executing that there is no such file or directory and returns me to home prompt.
All I can think of at this point is the cdrom0 that the vmserver puts on my desktop is according to the properties menu a iso of the files needed to load. There are two files one a vmware rpm file and the file I need a vmware tar.gz file.
The system is setup to load a cdrom0 physical drive when it loads to the desktop and I do have the 0ption in vm settngs at boot to remove the device. It could be the command "tar -xvf/media/cdrom0/*.tar.gz ~/vm" , wihen run in terminal is seeking the file in the file in the physical drive and not the ISO drive mounted on the desktop.
If anyone can help, please read all previous posts so you understand what the problem is.

I hit the wrong key and did not finish the post.
All this has to do with loading the Feisty 7.04 into a vmware server , loaded withing windows XP.

If anyone wants to research, I obtained all these instructions from the blog of - http://blog.clickonline.org.au/2007/05/02, I installed the vmserver software and loaded Feisty 7.04 according to instructions except instead of using a downloaded ISO of Feisty, I used a burned cd from a previous iso downloaded when 7.04 came out. The main reason I used it is it is I validated the cd and a new download is not always able to be properly validated as I am sure you all know. Thanks. EdWh
