Ubuntu cannot detect that I am connected

Asked by Nilesh

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 on my intel compaq presario.
I have properly configured Internet on the system using a sony ericsson W810i having EDGE/GPRS connection and included the proxy settings.

However, them problem is that "firefox is the only application which is able to connect to the internet".
All other applications like pidgin etc. are unable to connect.

Even the Sypnatic Package Manager is not able to connect to the internet. I have tried the options in the sypnatic manager by selecting both "direct connection" and "manual proxy" but none of them are working.

The computer also reports that "Mobile Broadband Connection 'loop mobile EDGE' active" which is correct.

Please help me out of this.

-Thank You

can you ping the server names that pidgin connects to for each account?

Can you resolve their names to IP addresses?

I am unable to ping. only firefox is working. Is there any way to set a "default connection" in ubuntu?

you could use:

sudo ifdown <adapter name>

to pull all other connections down. This will force all connections through the only available connection. You will need to use

sudo ifup <adapter name>

if you wish to use them later. If it works using this then you can script it to make life easier

I tried this. Closed all other adapters and now mobile broadband is the default connection. But the problem remains unsolved.

Can you provide the output of:

route

as well as the name of your GPRS device (e.g. eth0) etc

The device name is "ppp1" in some places, "Mobile Broadband Connection" in some other places. Is there any software I can use like a pc suite on Ubuntu which can properly install and set up the dial up connection?

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 8.10 too. When I tried the command "sudo ifup pp1" the terminal says that ppp1 is not configured but in fact it is configured.

Package manager sucks. I have given up. The terminal is able to access the internet and thats a good news for me. I am going to use the terminal for installing new files and removing.

How do I install the audio and video codecs using the terminal? What is the command line for it?
sudo apt-get (what to type here for the codecs?)

i recommend you add the medibuntu repo:

http://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

You can also run:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

which will give you lots of codecs ad other restricted license access stuff

Can you help with this problem?
