Wanna Get rid of Microsoft Entirely - Help me Lose Hotmail

I'd like to get rid of my Microsoft email account (hotmail). I heard Microsoft roots through your emails and uses your personal information. I'm new to Linux; are there better Linux email options that I can switch to, that are easy to set up with Ubuntu?

I use googlemail for all my email needs, I did have an ISP email, but when I changed ISP's, my new one only provided googlemail anyway, so it made sense to change over.

I use it with Thunderbird and find that the imap settings work well, giving me the option of using webmail/thunderbird as well as having access through my mobile phone, with everything being kept in sync.

Microsoft does not root through your personal information, that said hotmail is a web hosted email service, unless you are in a position to set up your own linux email server you're probably looking for another web hosted solution. Hotmail supports POP, if you decide to use Gmail for example you can configure it to download all of your messages from your Hotmail account in order to make the transition easier.

Gmail also support POP or IMAP to communicate with a desktop email client such as Evolution or Thunderbird.
