nvidia drivers cause power management to crash in zotac ion -A

Asked by Mark Cariaga

I'm currently using the Zotac Ion 330- nvidia ion chipset. I did not install the nvidia proprietary drivers and instead installed the 180.44 drivers from synaptic. Please take note that the display works fine based on my usage. The issue I experienced is from the power management and screensaver features in Ubuntu 9.04; the entire system hangs/crashes when I attempt to open the mentioned applications.

Please advise what information you want me to provide and how. I'm not that good in CLI, which is the reason why I did not install nvidia's own driver...

As a side note, you do not need the terminal to install restricted drivers. On the menu open System > Administration > Hardware Drivers. That will open the jockey-gtk program and it will list any restricted drivers that are available for your system. These are not the bleeding edge drivers that are available from nVidia's website, but they are slightly older ones that have been known to work well on Ubuntu after testing. If one shows up, simply check the check-box and it will install (you might have to enter your password). Most likely, it will also instruct you to restart. Take it's advice. ;)

Now, your problem seems to be a known bug. Visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/377370 and put in your story/any information that might help them. Also, if you can/want to try to give the information that has been requested by Scott Howard. If this is beyond you, let him know as well.

The screensaver issue might be a different problem like OpenGL. Does it only happen with a graphics intensive screen-savers? But, it is also worth mentioning in the bug report I linked to.

Hi Derek,

Thank you very much for the quick response. I went to see the link... my problem may be link to this bug... could also have something to do with the current nvidia linux driver that Ubuntu has in its repository. I hope that the new driver release from nvidia can be customized by ubuntu and be added into the repositories.

As for the screensaver, I did test it again and is really working even for 3D screensaver... BUT the power mangement link is the culprit which also had a link from the screensaver app. I initially just thought it was the screensaver app that has the issue. all the while it was power management that crashed when attempted to open.
