ATI or nVidia graphics card?

Have you upgraded it's driver using System > Administration > Hardware Drivers?

Open a terminal, Applications > Accessories > Terminal, and run the following command:
aplay -l

Please provide the answer to the questions and the output of the command.

Might as well tell you the next (potential step) to save time...

If the aplay -l command produces output with the word HDMI in it anywhere, then you have the support ready to go! Open System > Preferences > Sound and change the playback devices to the HDMI device. Close it and test your sound.

Please post new questions separately because launchpad doesn't really have a way of dealing with older questions
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
and if you edit an old question then it doesn't go past the front desk which is where most of the people that answer questions look to find questions worth answering ;)

Good luck and regards from
