logging out

Asked by Michael Pollock

Is there any way to eliminate the "end current session" option or at least reconfigure the same so that it is NOT the default?

I am the only user of my computer and have it so set up, so I find it quite annoying that my computer ends up rebooting when my intention is to shut it down.

Could you describe the behaviour you would like to have from the "end current session" option, please? I assume you are referring to the menu item in the "System" menu?

By the way, if you are the only user and aren't worried about someone else using your computer, you can set Ubuntu up so that you are logged in automatically. Just go to the System menu > Administration > Connection window, and click on the Security tab. You can then activate automatic connexions, and choose yourself as the user to be logged in automatically.

I am not certain how much more specific I can be. I want to ELIMINATE it so that I do not have to wonder if, walking away from the computer because my intentions are to shut it down, I will find it has rebooted when I return. This might become less of an issue for me once I have reached the point where I am able to run the Windows programs I want to use from within Kubuntu, whether it be using WINE or some other means, because I still use it far more than Linux, booting to Windows that is typically the reason I will shut down Kubuntu.

While I am not particularly concerned about someone else trying to use my computer, thinking your suggestion for setting up an automatic log-in might also achieve the actual result I want for logging-out, I looked for the Connection windows under System\Administration and could not find it, much less a Security Tab within the same or anywhere else in the System menu. I am convinced that some of my problems with Kubuntu are the result of a move to Kubuntu from Ubuntu, and this may be one further manifestation of the same.

I apologize: my instructions were indeed for plain Ubuntu, not Kubuntu. I'm afraid that I don't use Kubuntu and am unable to help you with this...

I'm sure someone else will step in with a good answer.

There's an option for that. Look in the system configuration dialog, advanced options tab and session manager (my distro is in another language so the name maybe isn't correct, its a red icon) I think that's what you're looking for.
This is on my system which is Feisty with KDE 3.5.7 by the way

Another option would be using a shortcut, alt+ctrl+shift+pagedown shut downs the computer without confirmation, if it doesn't work you may need to set in the keyboard config

I am still new enough to Linux that I cannot find the menu option you described and your keyboard shortcut did not work for me. I doubt that the difference of language is the reason, as I have studied Latin, French and Russian, so unless the name of the file in your distro is idiomatic, I should have been able to find it.

To configure the shutdown shortcut, I went to =>System Settings=>Hardware=>Keyboard, but the only available settings were the number lock, key repeat rate, and key click volume, with no means to add any options.

does your system settings dialog look like this?
http://kubuntu.org/images/feistysysset.png

the option I'm talking about is the Session Manager in the advanced options tab of the dialog window (red square icon).

If your looks different and there's not a similar option then maybe you're using a kubuntu version that I'm not familiar with (the screenshot is from the lastest kubuntu release, 7.04 or feisty fawn)

I am NOT seeing the Advanced Options tab within System Settings.

As I said earlier, I would not be surprised if at least some of my problems are the result of my having a "mut", part GNOME Ubuntu and part KDE Kubuntu, since I was unable to get a "clean" installation with Kubuntu so ended up installing Breezy Badger Ubuntu and trying to convert it to Kubuntu. Since first installing Ubuntu, I have allowed every update of which I have been notified, but to the extent that Opera's recommendation was that I install the latest version to correct a problem that developed after I did an update, I am not certain I have indeed been getting the updates I actually need.

I've not noticed any reports of "broken" packages, but I've not checked recently and when I opened KPackage Manager to do so, I notice some games being reported as installed that I was certain I had removed. When I attempted to remove them again, I was prompted for my root password and was denied recognition of the same. Clearly something is "broken". Would it be possible for me to do a full "reinstall" of Feisty Fawn without a risk that it would overwrite the files and folders presently "on" my Desktop or elsewhere such as my Opera Download folder?

any fresh install of ubuntu or kubuntu will format the partition where is installed, you need to make a backup of your important files on CD/DVD before that.

how did you switch from ubuntu to kubuntu? I never tried using GNOME myself but I hear both GNOME and KDE can coexist fine in the same system.

Can you help with this problem?
