can't get the login screen after installation.getting stuck in the shell.

i'm not getting the login screen after installation.its not getting out of the shell.i tried startx but it said 'command not found'. Ubuntu version 9.04. same with kubuntu 9.04.

try

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

instead of startx. Then we will see a bit more...

no buddy :-( it says 'sudo not found'

Uppa... "sudo" is an important core of Ubuntu. Seems to be a corrupt installation. Lets try something:

uname -r

and then:

ls -al /etc/init.d/
