Cannot Start Ubuntu installed using Wubi

Asked by Dale Maris

I have been running Ubuntu 8.10 on my Dell Inspiron 531 for a long time. No when I attempt to boot into Ubuntu I received an error I receive the following messages:

    BootPart 2.60 Bootsector (c) 1993 - 2005 Gilles Vollant http://www.winimage.com/ . . .
    Loading New Partition
    Bootsector from C. H. Hochstatter

    BOOTMGR missing
    Press Ctl-Alt-Del to restart

I believe that when Windows applied an update it corrupted by duel boot. How can I restore my Ubuntu start up?

I'd say its impossible for a windows update to alter a boot loader, but this program you show the error message is not a standard package, and I'd suggest you talk to their support team to get help with this program.

Once you get your Windows side fixed up, you'll need to fix Ubuntu and here's the documentation on how to perform this next step.

Good luck.

I really appreciate you response. I was not clear, my computer will boot to Windows, Vista, but when I select Ubuntu, that when I get the messages in my original post. I will check out the docs you suggested and let you know if that fixes my problem. Thanks Dale

I apologize that I did not state within my text that this is a Wubi install. I do not have separate partitions for Ubuntu. I do not understand the boot process with Wubi. I want to provide an update of what I have done.

I saved my Ubuntu folder in Vista. I was attempting to just reinstall Wubi Ubuntu and then switch my Ubuntu folder (drive) to restore my file, e-mails and other Ubuntu data. I could not get the un-install to complete. I was missing some file.

After receiving Jeruvy's response to my question, I did the following:

I have EasyBCD installed on my Vista machine and I have now gone back to that to add a new entry for Linux , Type=Wubi entry. I deleted the entry with the original BOOTMGR missing error.

I now received the following message that I am not sure what I need to do to recover.

GRUB4DOS 0.4.3 2007-06-14, memory 636K / 1981M, codeEnd 0x3EF2C
[Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported for the first word, TAB list possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB list the possible completion of a device/filename.]
grub>

Any knowledge of what I am missing? Thanks Dale

Can anyone determine if the Bootloader Path \NST\NeoGrup.mer is the incorrect pach for starting Ubuntu? I thought that I needed to use C:\Ubuntu\... ?

Typo in previous post, should be \NST\NeoGrub.mbr
