Installing Ubuntu 9.04

I want to install Ubuntu 9.04 over old version 8.04. My question is do I need to back up my email area first or will the install from the disk keep my email in tack?

Why don´t you upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 and then 9.04?

No need to back up anything then and risking to loose something.
