Did you open a terminal and type:

gksu "update-manager -c"

BTW, are you upgrading to 6.10 so you can then upgrade to 7.04? If so, I might suggest just installling 7.04 fresh. It is quite fast and you will limit your problems. Of course, the big problem is backing up if you don't have /home on it's own partition (and even if you do you should back up). It's an option but I think the ubuntu people would like to see update manager work well.

yes to both questions. I would like to install v.7.04 but I thought I had to install v.6.10 first. this is the only os on this pc. also when I use terminal and use gksu "update-manager" now I have a error message,"apt API not stable yet",ect... So I guess my next question is can I Install 7.04 from a cd over this current version?

Yes, you can always install from CD but that will COMPLETELY erase everything on the partition to which you install. If that is okay, then go for it. If you have things you want to keep be sure to back them up. If you do end up reinstalling from scratch then I would suggest creating a partition for /home so that all your personal files and configurations are separate from the partition holding the OS. That way you can reinstall the OS and not touch your personal files. It makes upgrading easy and it also allows for reinstalling should you need to (I break my system from time to time:))

Good luck.

found another problem, cd drive just failed, sounds like my coffee grinder. This might be why the boot cd would not work. Looks like its off to the pc store, then try to boot again.
