no sound during test device

 I upgraded to tubuntu8.10 and have no sound. I dont no anything about linux and learning as much as I can. I read to try and test the device sound and when I do I get this message,

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback. Device is being used by another application.

hope some one can help. Thanks Ron

sudo lshw -C sound

Does sound work in any app at all? Startup sounds?

Check the speakers are plugged into the little greeen port at the back if you have separate speakers ;)
