How do I disable automounting for mtp devices?

Asked by Sean Fitzpatrick

In the upgrade to Jaunty it appears that a feature was added to automount mtp media devices (in my case, a Philips gogear mp3 player). I like the idea in principle but it just doesn't work in my case. I'm not entirely sure what information to provide because I have no idea how the automount feature works.

On previous versions of Ubuntu the player worked fine (if a bit slow) with libmtp8 and Amarok (when 1.4 was still available). It works a bit better using the latest libmtp (0.3.6) instead of the year-old version in the repositories (0.3.0), and I can use mtpfs with it as well. (I should note that version 0.3.0 only works if I tweak the source code a bit, but later versions work fine.)

Here's the problem with the automount feature:
     1. It takes about 10 minutes from plugging in the device until it appears in the places menu.
     2. Once it does, I can't mount it, because it's detected as a different model (I have a 6 GB 1630, it's detected as a 1 GB 14XX)
     3. Unmounting doesn't always go smoothly, and also takes a long time.
     4. While all of this is going on, I can't access the device using mtp-tools, gnomad2, etc. Once it (finally) mounts, it gives me the option of opening Rhythmbox to view the files, but the device doesn't appear if you choose this option. (However, if you unmount, and then open Rhythmbox, the device appears normally, using the mtp plugin.)

In other words, if I want to add or remove music on my player, I have to first wait a good 15 minutes for the computer to fail in its attempt to automount the device! I've heard of people with other players (eg Creative Zen) having trouble as well.
I would like to be able to either disable this altogether, or at least configure it to detect the right device. Thanks in advance if you can help me out, and please let me know if there's more info I can provide.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately none of the suggestions on that thread work for me - the trouble is that mtp devices do not mount as a mass storage device (mtp=media transfer protocol=M$ 'plays for sure'). To mount it manually one needs to install mtpfs, which lets you mount it as a FUSE file system. But as far as I can tell, this is not how the system is doing it when I plug it in.

Here is the output of mtp-detect when I plug in the device:

Listing raw device(s)
   Found 1 device(s):
   Philips: HDD1630/17 or HDD1620/00 (0471:014c) @ bus 0, dev 4
Attempting to connect device(s)
usb_claim_interface(): Device or resource busy
LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device
Unable to open raw device 0
OK.

Before Jaunty, running mtp-detect worked as intended. Now I have to wait (I timed it yesterday) 15 minutes before the device ceases to be busy, and then hope that I can unmount without any errors.

I'm sorry, but I'm unfamiliar with mtp devices :/

When my MTP device automounts, it has the address of gphoto2://[usb:002,006]/ It does not load under /media, but somehow under gphoto2. I cannot find this program anywhere or preferences to turn it off.

I used this fix:

This is just a work around. I changed /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors/ gphoto2.monitor to allow the device to be mounted.

[RemoteVolumeMonitor]
Name=GProxyVolumeMonitorGPhoto2
DBusName=org.gtk.Private.GPhoto2VolumeMonitor
#IsNative=false
IsNative=true

from here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/330383

And it has prevented the MTP player from automounting, allowing it to be detected by rhythmbox upon loading.

Thanks gnimsh, that solved my question.
