hpet is a timer (High Precision Event Timer) used in your kernel.
If you're having problem with it, you can try to change the timer you're using. Details in how to do so are here (http://my.opera.com/PiklesOnFire/blog/index.dml/tag/hpet%20increasing%20min_delta_ns). You just have to change one line in /boot/grub/menu.lst

This problem is addressed in bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/270798 .
