hi is kde better than gnome or can i have the best of booth on one machine

Whether or not one is better than the other is a matter of personal taste. You can have both. Install Ubuntu and then install the K desktop from the repository.

They are essentially the same operating system with different faces.

Most people use the Gnome desktop
