Possible to downgrade from Ubuntu 9.04 to 8.04?

Asked by Robert Collard

I didn't do my homework (how many times have you heard that before?) I set up my laptop with version 9.04 and after struggling with things like DVDs not playing, I found out that Dell recommended vers 8.04 for my computer, in fact I could have bought one with that system installed. OH WELL! Is it possible to go backwards? I'm confident using Terminal, not a newbie when it comes to computers. Running Vista Home premium along with Ubuntu on the laptop now, off to a rough start. Getting there is half the fun. Need more info, just ask.

Hello Robert,

You want to downgrade to 8.04 just because of the DVD playback issue, or are you having any other problem? Dell recommends version 8.04 because that's what they ship with some of their computers, and not because it works better with Dell computers.

As for the DVD playback and other restricted media playback, you may want to take a look at these:

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Jaunty#CDs_and_DVDs
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

I recommend you always use the latest Ubuntu release, as it improves a lot with each version.

I have installed the restrictive package and when I tried both libdvdcss and libcdvdcss2 I got 404 not found using past information from the forum.  That is not the only problem but a major one in my book.  i could always use Vista to watch DVDs, but it would be nice if it works here as well.  I have an Apple computer as well that uses Unix and I have worked that from the command line with no problems.

Sorry, just noticed when I got the copy from the forum that my capslock key was on the whole time.  I didn't mean to yell, honest.

Another question concerning this problem, could I be using the wrong edition of the ver 9.04 system? My laptop is a Del Inspiron 1545. It has an Intel core 2 duo processor with a 64 bit bus, 3GB RAM, a 160GB HD partitioned in half for Vista and Ubuntu . Should I have installed the AMD64 version rather than the i386 version? If so how can I correct this? I have both versions ISOs on disk now. Funny thing, they both work fine from the disk. I thought one of them would have a conflict with the hardware. I'm thoroughly confused at this point. Please help?

Here's what you need to do:

1- Add Medibuntu repository and key:

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/jaunty.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo update

2- Install libdvdcss2 and video players and codecs:

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 vlc w32codecs xine-ui

I recommend using vlc or xine to play DVDs or any other video file, as they are far superior to totem.

Both the 64bit (AMD64) or the 32bit (i386) versions will work fine on your computer. If you had 4GB of RAM, I would recommend the 64bit version to make better use of the memory, but since you have 3GB the 32bit will work just fine.

BINGO (Shout of joy!) Did something right? Seems like I have typed the same thing over and over again and this time it worked THANKS! Thanks for the advice on the 32 bit - 64 bit question too. I may add RAM later and upgrade when the next version comes out.
