Bootable CD for PowerPC G3

Asked by oddvar

Hi I have problem with Booting my iMac PowerPC G3. It is not about hold the C-key at boot.
No other CD's than the native OSX CD's will boot on this computer.
I have OSX 9.2 Norwegian version. Can anyone help me with using MKISOFS to make a CD that will boot and install Ubuntu on iMac? I will write this CD from this Ubuntu 9.04 computer english version.
Can anyone please help?
I have tried the Ubuntu PowerPC ISO, it didn't work. The CD must specially be written for this old iMac.
"Ordinary" blank CD's get ejected from the iMac after few seconds, so I can not use the iMac to burn the CD.
Help will be much apriciated, this is the last hope for this machine.

Their is no specific CD type for a Mac, they use ISO standard CD layouts and data structures. Make sure you MD5 check the ISO and verify the CD once booted to. You will need the PPC ISO

Here is hardy for PPC

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/hardy/release/ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-powerpc.iso

Burn that to a CD and make your Macboot from it.

Thank you, but this I have done already. The PowerPC ISO CD wont boot on this iMac It show correct name of the CD, but that same CD show no files. The CD burn sucessfully on a Windows computer, but have absolute no use on the iMac.
As far as I have seen, the MKISOFS program have some options for making it a native MFE CD, and its excactly what I look for. Like MKISOFS <name-of-iso> osx-hfs <path-to-CD> ----- It is this command I cant find the correct parameters for. My hope is this will boot and instal Ubuntul

Some dude did it here with the mini.iso file

Maybe you could install it over LAN. I suggest a wired connection as it is tonnes more reliable than wifi (and the mini iso will more than likely have the driver for the wired)

You could message the guy making the video to ask him how he booted the CDs and how he burned them. He clearly has a success story :)

Its OK now. Holding the C-key didnt boot the CD, but Alt-key + password booted it.
Now I'm happy with Ubunitu 9.04 in that old iMac.
