Installed - but no opstart

Asked by Anders

I have used this guide without the use of a cd: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

When the computer is booting I got 2 possibilities “unetbooting” and “Windows”, then I chose unetbooting, it installs unbutu on the hole disk, and everything looks fine, but after the installation when I restart the computer, windows starts up, and I don't get any choice choosing unbutu (though I actually installed it on the hole disk). Why? Please help me.

Did you MD5 check the ISO you downloaded? Did you verify the CD once initially booted to?

Sorry but i am new to all this :)

No i did not MD5 check it, how do i do that?

As i said, i did not use a cd, but this guide: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net

I did not use a cd because my cd-drive is broken.

I installed the iso file on the disk (in the computer), and then it just booted, and i came into BIOS where i chose "unetbooting" and the instalation started, i have also tried installing the ISO on a usb-drive but nothing happened in the BIOS.

Thanks so much for helping :)

Here is how:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Here are some common hashes:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

You have no way of knowing that the files you download are correct. If you can MD5 check them against the correct hash then you can verify they are good. This is CRITICAL to a good install.
If any of the data you downloaded is bad you will need to delete it and redownload. Bad data will make a bad install. Blindly using untested data may also give a bad install.

Pleae tell 2 friends about MD5 checking and tell them to tell 2 friends.

Thanks

I am afraid ubuntu has ruined my computer, because one of the disks I had on my computer is now gone, I cant see it anywhere, and I think ubuntu is installed on that disk. I even cant restore the disk because I need the XP restore-cd, and my cd-drive is not working, and I cant go back in the restore-program that is installed on my computer.

I regret that I tried installing ubuntu on my pc, and just want I gone, so I don't have to buy a new disk instead of the one which is “gone”.

Consider installing ubuntu on your pc...

if you want to see what disks are available you can run:

sudo fdisk -l

bear in mind that companys often partition a windows drive into 2 parts to split the user data away from programs. Acer do this a lot.

Have tried that now, but it doesnt work, is there anything els i can do?

Yes, i also think the drive was in 2 parts, before i installed ubuntu

Isn't there anything that i can do now?

Thanks for help :)

You will most likeley find it was a single disk with 2 partitions. Windows sees partitions (incorrectly) as drives. If you boot into your BIOS which is operating system independent, you will see a single disk. This is nothing to do with Ubuntu but is how the system was shipped. So your system is neither "ruined" nor is a drive "gone"

If i look under the disk which is still there, under "hardware" i can se that there is a disk which is not active, but i am not able to activate it.

Damn! i wish someone could have warned me installing ubuntu, didnt think it would ruin my disk.

well to be positive i have learned from this experience, and will never try to install ubuntu again, or recomend it to anyone.

Mark as solvedif you wish to discontinue this.

If the disk shows up in the output of:
sudo fdisk -l

Then it is there, just not partitioned or ready to be used

Can you please also provide the output of the command:

mount

If you wish to continue.

Thanks

Didnt work to, but i dont think i know how to do it, because no files works when i run them.

I have now deleted everything, and want to try a last time, and as you said before i should download MD5, but when i downloaded it, it came as a zip file, and when i click on it it just opens the win-zip program, where i shows alot of other files. What should i do here?

Can't i just do it without a cd like this guide?: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/, because my cd-drive is not working.

You dont install an MD5 file, you install an MD5 checking app and check the file and compare it to the md5 code of good images.

If you netboot, MD5 check whatever you download. Even the installer. Chec that is good too. Chec everyting you download so you know its good.
