file roller extracts a .zip file, cause nautilus/desktop to hang when accessing folder

Asked by todlangweilig

I opened a zip file, TaskCoach-0.64.0.zip, browsed a few of the files, and went to extract the folder. I extracted the folder to my home folder. I extracted it with either the 'All Files' or 'Selected Files' option, but I think it was 'All Files'. That was the only option I touched. I went to view the files in Places > Home Folder, nautilus loaded with no file icons and was unresponsive. I went to close it and had to Force Quit. Nautilus closed, and then reopen with no dialogs. It was still unresponsive. I when to the System Monitor to End Process, nautilus again closed and reopen. At this point I noticed that it was continually allocating more RAM, so I did Stop Process.

At this point I opened the Terminal and navigated to the extracted folder, all of the folders contents appear to be there. I open one of the files and it appeared valid.

So I decided to try extracting it again, this time to the desktop to see what would happen. I believe I extracted one file using 'Selected Files' to the Desktop. When I tried to go to the desktop, none of my files showed up, just the background. The mouse cursor is the standard busy cursor. From what the Terminal says, the file is there, and I can access it. I've saved the zip file in my home folder in-case it proves useful.

I will leave my computer running. If there is anything I can do that would be useful in figuring out what is going on, Id like to help. Does anyone know what might be going on?
