NVIDIA Graphic Card is not working

Asked by haznizul

I've tested my graphic card by using this command: glxinfo | grep rendering. The result is: "direct rendering: No".

Currently, I'm using NVIDIA FX 5200. I've installed the NVIDIA restricted driver twice and it make my computer unable to download updates and install additional software from reposatories.

Please suggest to me what should I do?

Can you please explain how the NVIDIA driver makes you unable to download updates? And does the driver actually work when you enable it?

I've downloaded NVIDIA restricted driver when I tried to activate Desktop Effects. I can't explain how it stop me from connecting ubuntu server. What I did is I reinstall ubuntu 7.04 and try to reinstall the NVIDIA driver again and the same thing happen, it interfere my connection with reposatories. I afraid to do install it again. I've customized a lot of thing in Ubuntu installed in my pc right now and I don't want to reformat my hardisk for the third time.

I use Ubuntu for quite a while now and a reinstall was for me never needed, so I assume that is the same case with you. You can disable the driver at any time, so that's not a problem.

When you install the driver and open Synaptic, what happens?

When I install the NVIDIA driver, Desktop Effect running ok. I can still surf websites. However, I was unable to connect to ubuntu server.

I've tried to uninstall the driver twice, i can do it but it still stop me from updating my computer. Even after I restart my computer, if I'm not mistaken.

Any comment?

As I asked, what kind of error does Synaptic show when you open Synaptic Package Manager?

I'm not sure about the repo settings. Mine do not match what you have. Do you have the driver installed now? If not look at your repos and see if they match the repos listed in the error.
Or list your repos here. (/etc/apt/sources.list) and maybe someone from your region could compare the repos. You could try backing them up. Installing the driver then restoring the original sources list back to do updates.

Have you installed the anon-proxy package? If so you may want to remove it then restart the computer to solve this.
