Can't get 9.04 to recognize cd or flash drive media

I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Dimension 3000. The CD Drive worked as I was able to install the OS from the ISO CD. Now that the OS is installed, the system doesn't recognize any media CD I try to load in the Cd drive.

In addition, the system does not recognize any USB flash drive media I insert in the system. USB ports do support mouse and keyboard however.

Any help is appreciated.

if you run:

lsmod | grep usb

Can you provide the output.

I solved this problem by adjusting the Permissions of my user account to enable "view media".
