Ubuntu 8.10 will not installed properly

Asked by clombard

I installed 8.10 on a non-working Windows xp machine. The installation went ok...but when it came time to restart...I got the following message box:

"Server Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/lib/gdm but is not owned by user 105 or group 113. Please correct the ownership or GDM configuration and restart GDM."

Can anyone tell me what this means and how do I fix it...?

OK first things to clean up:
1) Did you MD5 check the ISO you downloaded?
2) Did you verify the CD once initially booted to?

If the ISO you used was not tested, go test it using:

The correct hashes: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes
The method: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

It is CRITICAL for a good install that you MD5 check your ISO as well as verify the CD is good. If your ISO is bad then it WILL create issues.

If the ISO is good and the CD is ok as well, then you can try this as a fix to gdm not loading:

Reboot system and press ESC when grub loads, select recovery mode and then select root. You now have a console with which to repair your system.

Here is my owner of the folder:
-rw-r----- 1 root root 45 2009-06-27 17:02 :0.Xauth
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 70 2009-06-27 17:02 :0.Xservers

run this command:

chown -R root:root /var/lib/gdm/

then run:

shutdown -r now

That will then reboot your system and hopefully you will get a boot. If the CD is bad then forget all this stuff and reinstall with a good CD.
