A lot will work out of the box. Id recommend a cheep popular webcam so get a well known brand (like logitech etc) but get a slightly older one like about a year old one. Generally most of them will work.

Hope that helps

The Logitech Messenger webcam can be made to work but the process is very confusing because there are two models which require different drivers and the end result does not equate to the amount of effort that has to be expended to get this webcam fully functional.

There is a technological division in webcams - non-UVC and UVC. The current standard is UVC. Here is a URL to explain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_video_device_class

The Messenger webcam is non-UVC.

The driver for UVC compliant webcams is already built into the Linux kernel.

Of added interest is that Skype recommends some webcams such as the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. This webcam is UVC compliant. It is also one of the best webcams you can buy.

A list of webcams with their status in GNU/Linux:
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

Open a terminal and give the command
lsusb
For instance, I get:
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0c45:62c0 Microdia Sonix USB 2.0 Camera
The Vendor Id and the Product Id are those after "ID": 0c45 and 62c0 respectively

The problem could also be in Skype and not in Linux non supporting your webcam.

Can you help with this problem?
