Flickering vertical lines on screen when installing UBUNTU

Asked by Flemming

I use Polyview V396 with Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8x vidio card.
When instakking Ubuntu and when it is ready to install I keep getting a
Vertical line flickering screen.
I tried a previous Ubuntu install with the same result. Was hoping the
new version had fixed the problem. I am nearly sure it has to do with the vidio card,
but how do I fix it.
I used to rum Mandrake a few years ago.

Thank you Flemming

Thanks for your question.

I'm not sure if I got it right: Ubuntu isn't installed yet, since you experience problems with the live-cd, right?

If so, please try to use the "alternate desktop cd" at http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download. It comes with an text based installer.

Please report if the problem still exists after you've installed ubuntu.

Thank you Marcus.
I downloaded alternate Ubundu burned the iso file and converted it.
The only difference using this version was that it took 3-4 hours to
complete, but the same problem.
As soon as Ubuntu is installed and starting to start I get a screen
with vertical lined flickering.
If I only could the program up I could most likely change the config
file to suit my video card and my flat screen.
I think it is the Polyview V396 Monitor that doesn't seem to work.
I tried to install my old mandrake which I have had installed with this
graphic card, but same result since i got the new Monitor.
With my old monitor same video card mandrake worked fine.
Any idea where I can download a driver for this monitor and how
do I install before I install Ubuntu.
Thank you
Flemming

Can you paste here the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files?
I also found this information from the producer's site. Can you check that this is in line
with your documentation:

Native Resolution 1280 x 1024
Horizontal Scan rate 30~82 KHz
Vertical Scan rate 56~76 Hz

Thanks.

Hi Cesare,
I wish I could show you the config files you mentioned.
The problem is that I cannot install Ubuntu. Once it
is uploaded in memory ready to install I get the screen
in vertical flickering lines and therefore cannot see anything
on the screen.
When going into Windows I cannot read Linux, so no way to do
what you ask.
I have changed the resolution to 1280x1024 but that did not help.
This is what happened last time I tried to install and really after
a few days trying and mocking up your window start up, you
tend to give up.
I really do want to install but don't know how.
Is there any way I can install a linux graphics driver before
installing Ububtu???
Thank all for your help so far.

You can login in Recovery mode and save your files to a removable media, or copy them to a fat32 partition (if you have one).
Or install ntfs-3g and copy them to your windows partition.
Or install this utility in windows and use it to copy those files:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ext2fsd/Ext2Fsd-0.31a.exe?download

If any of these is not an option, you have to edit those files yourself and check what is wrong:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration

Most probably is just a question to add resolution and refresh rates and perhaps disable EDID/DDC.

Also, try for the time being to use the vesa or nv drivers. Once you are setup, you can, if you wish, download the restricted drivers using the restricted drivers manager.

Very strange indeed.
Not even a Xorg.0.log.old or Xorg.1.log?

Try adding these lines in your Monitor section:

        HorizSync 30-82
        VertRefresh 56-76

And if still doesn't work try adding this in the Device section:

Option "DDC" "false"

had similar problem and found out that at the bottom of the boot menu screen there is an option to change the resolution. click F4 to change the VGA setting. It works for me. Oh by the way, I'm running "gutsy"

Can you help with this problem?
