applications bar dissapeared

I needed to use the calculator which is in the applications bar and it has gone not very clever with computers and tried all I can for hours still not got it back

We probably need more information about your system in order to help you. Can you please point which version of ubuntu you are using and in which circumstances the problem happens ?

I suppose the upper bar didn't disappear but the "Application" did. You have "Places" and "System" on it, isn't it? If so click in upper panel on "System", choose "Preferences" and there "Main menu". A window appears with the items shown or not shown in the upper panel. I suppose the "Accessories" in the right panel of this window is somehow unchecked. Check it and you will have Accessories in your upper panel. Now clicking on "Accessories" in the LEFT panel of this window you can choose applications to be shown in the Accessories submenu.

There's a typo in the first sentence. Read Accessories instead of Application please.
