Ubuntu only shows cursor after install reboot.

Asked by SymonFenix

No matter if I get a new ISO or how many I burn, after the new install reboots, I get a curso in the upper right corner.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 2009MHZ
2GB Mem
2 1tb WD HDs ( Raid )
1 250 WD HD ( Boot )
1 500 WD HD
Masscool RAID Controller ( I've tried both hardware and software RAID ).

I do have the 64bit Ubuntu Server Ed.

What is going on here?
Any ideas?

The server edition by default does not have a GUI.

By cursor you mean a Command line interface with a blinking cursor, right ?

Are you sure you require a server Edition ?

If not, you should just download the Live CD edition from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

Well,

I'm putting together a testbox for my photos and websites using PHP & MySQL. I'd like to use the server addition. If you telling me that it wont wok, I have no issues with switching if I can still do the above.

Well with the server edition you will not get a GUI by default, you will need to install it.

Otherwise on a desktop edition using the Live CD, you could always install PHP and MySQL.

Run this command once you are connected to the Internet

$ sudo aptitude update && sudo tasksel install lamp-server

When I say theres a cursor is in the upper left corner, it just blinks no function just blinks. I'm gonna try the 64bit Desktop version and see what that does. I just thought I could get something easier with the LAMP already setup.

The desktop can do everything the server install can do. The server edition just doesnt come with all the X apps and x server by default as this is a waste of resources as the desktop will never be used. Servers will be accessed by ssh or web interface and be configured that way.
If you need a desktop system I stronly recommend the desktop install. The server install supports PAE to allow greater ram access (if your cpu is 32bit but you would like to use 5Gb ram for example. Otherwise the functionality is much the same.

Can you help with this problem?
