Error when installing Pidgin

Asked by qO.Op

Hi,
I tried to install latest Pidgin 2.5.7 and I got this error??
What should I do to correct this error?

pidgin:
Depends: libpurple0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: perl (>=5.10.0-11.1ubuntu2.2) but 5.10.0-11.1ubuntu2 is to be installed

Thanks in advance,
Eric

How are you installing the app?

What is the output of:

lsb_release -c

I have jaunty installed and have perl 5.10.0-19ubuntu1 so installing should not be an issue.

Thanks

I installing by going System/Administrator/Synaptic Package Manager to search for Pidgin and mark for installation.

Then I got this error message:
pidgin:
Depends: libpurple0 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: perl (>=5.10.0-11.1ubuntu2.2) but 5.10.0-11.1ubuntu2 is to be installed

Before that I was uninstalled Pidgin early version as it got connection error on Yahoo. From my understand from forum, they suggest I should uninstall current Pidgin and reinstall latest version.

You should add this repository from Launchpad.net for the latest releases of Pidgin
https://launchpad.net/~pidgin-developers/+archive/ppa

There are instructions on this page on how to add the repository.

After you have added the repository, you can goto System -> Administration -> Update Manager
Click on Check and you should have the the Pidgin update available.

P.S. Make sure you add the repository for your appropriate release of Ubuntu
As mentioned above if you are unsure of this run the following from the (Applications -> Accessories -> ) Terminal:

$ lsb_release -c

The output will show you either one of the following
1. hardy
2. intrepid
3. jaunty
4. karmic

Accordingly you should add the correct line from the launchpad PPA for Pidgin
