ATI Radeon HD 4350 (RV710) support?

Asked by Roman Polach

Hi.
I have bought a new graphics, ATI Radeon HD 4350 (RV710) / PCIe16.
But in Ubuntu (9.04) I have problems both with free and proprietary drivers.

With default / open source driver:
  - compiz does not work at all
  - glxgears shows FPS about 380 which is far less than my old R280-based radeon card

With fglrx proprietary driver (installed thru standard ubuntu way: System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers)
  - desktop freezes too often (mostly with mplayer),
  - me-tv does not show a picture (with none of available video output setting)
  - some other applications behave strangely (gkrellm with alltray)

I would like to make any driver (but preferably the open source one) to work fully with my graphics,
how can I do it?

Is there any setting of x.org I can hint driver to use the adapter better?
Or should I wait for newer x.org / radeon or radeonhd driver?
(Btw. how I can get information if I am using radeon or radeonhd driver?)

Thank you very much for any help.

Note: because I have installed packages
xserver-xorg-video-ati and
xserver-xorg-video-radeon
but not xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd
I am not using radeonhd driver.

So my questions are: To make compiz working and 3D reasonable fast,
1) can xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd help?
2) how can I select between xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon ?
3) can I do some clever x.org / driver setting?

1) No. There is no open-source 3D hardware acceleration at this time (it's under development) for the RadeonHD cards.
2) They are the same driver, the 'ati' is just a wrapper around 'radeon' (and other drivers for older ATI hardware)
3) Some people report using this in the Device section of xorg.conf helps with the fglrx driver:
Option "EnableRandR12" "false"
