Can't play AVI videos, player shuts down

Asked by Alex_Mzt

Everytime I try to open an AVI video, the default video player briefly opens and it inmediately shuts down, I even installed MPlayer but the same happens.

I also can't burn DVDs from AVI files, I get a message saying that I don't have the proper "complements"

I've already added the Medibuntu repositories.

Thanks!
Alex.

You probably need to use some DVD authoring tool like Devede. You can find it in Add/Remove Programs under the Applications menu.

I couldn't find those apps in Add/Remove Programs, I installed other video players but I still can't open avi files with them, I'm using Jaunty Jackalope.

Thanks!

You mean you cannot view .avi files with VLC Player as well ?

1. Goto Add/Remove Programs
2. In the 'Show' column on the top, Choose "All Available Applications"
3. In the search box type gstreamer
4. Check the following: "GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin" , "GStreamer extra plugins" , "GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack" , "GStreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad", "GStreamer fluendo MPEG2 demuxing plugin", "GStreamer Dirac video plugin".
5. Confirm all the warnings if it is not illegal to playback these formats in your area.
6. Search for 'mplayer', check "MPlayer" as well as "SMPlayer"
7. Search for 'VLC' and check "VLC media player"
8. Search for 'DeVeDe' and check "DeVeDe" (DeVeDe is a program to create video DVDs, suitables for home players, from any number of video files, in any of the formats supported by Mplayer)

Apply all these changes wait for it to download and install.

You really should have any problems playing .avi or .mp3 files now.
If you cannot for any reason play these files with the default Movie Player (Totem), you can use VLC Player or SMPlayer.

As for DVD authoring with .avi files , the Devede tool should work just fine !

Yes, the player shut down inmediately after I try to open any avi video.

I did what you suggested, only I couldn't install "GStreamer fluendo MPEG2 demuxing plugin", it said that it was in conflict with another application, thay I should use Synaptic to fix it though I don't know how.

After partially doing what you suggested I still have these problems with all players except SMPlayer, when I try to open an avi video with it it doesn't shut down, I can hear the audio but the video is black.

Should I try to find a way to install the plugin that failed?

Thanks,
Alex.

hmm

As regards to *any* video player shutting down, I've had a similar problem in the past, I just remembered about it.
About a year ago, using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (is that what you are running ? ), along with a very old nvidia geforce4 graphics card and compiz enabled, I ran into these problems.
If I played too many videos, maybe for reason, all my video players crashed as soon as they started playback of audio/video. Do not know the solution, for it exactly, or even if it is related to your problem, but my particular problem vanished after I installed Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. Which release of Ubuntu are you using ?

As for the conflicts with another application, you can do one thing to check what the conflict is.

Goto System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
At the bottom left you will see the filter options, choose "Broken" . If you see any packages in the main right window, those are packages that are broken.
See if they relate to Gstreamer MPEG2 in anyway and take the appropriate action.
You should remove the offending package if you are sure you do not need it and that removing it will not remove other required packages.
You can also try to re-install and see what is the conflicting error that it shows up and paste it here or show a screenshot.
