My ubuntu9.04 has just stopped working.

My ubuntu9.04 has just stopped working, whenever i start my laptop,i see a fine multicoloured strip.
For your information, last time i had to close ubuntu by pressing power button as it hanged up.That's it. What should i do? All other operating systems are running properly.

Boot to recovery mode for your kernel (ESC when grub loads) and you can select fix graphics. This will hopefully get you an x server when you run:

shutdown -r now

this didn't work.
and ya,the boot menu shows two recovery options,something like 2.11 and 2.13. what should i choose? i tried both.

Either is fine. I would boot to live cd to check you harddrive and ram for errors.

in recovery console please choose xserver for display
it should work i think that is the last option in recovery
