Asked by Ellen

I cannot connect to the internet. I was connected before and I tried downloading updates and somehow it got interupted. I was able to fix that problem but after trying to research the problem it says that the browser is sleeping.

What browser do you use? You said you were able to fix the problem with the downloading of updates got interrupted; but what exactly did you do? Also what is it that says the browser is sleeping?

Firefox is the browser. When I was running the updates it got interupted and said to open a terminal and run the DPKG which I did. In checking for an internet connection it says it is connected but browser is sleeping.

It looks something went wrong because of the interruption of updating.
Wouldn't it be easier reinstalling the Firefox?

I thing yes, you can try to. You can do it this way:

Go System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager.
Give your password, type in search field "Firefox".
A window comes and installed items are with a green squares.
Find "Firefox-3.0", right-click on it and choose "Mark for Reinstallation".

That should do it.
I've never did it so I suggest you wait for a while for somebody to tell us he did it and found something wrong with it.

But are you sure your Firefox doesn't work? The System Monitor on my machine always tells me Firefox is sleeping, but it works.

Well, the half of the good answer is the properly answered question.
Would you mind describing what is your wish, what did you did to achieve the wish and why you don't reach your wish?

Now...
The last answer of mine was supposed to be at another question. Somehow it is stated here...
Never mind...

Ellen, did you try Firefox with some internet address?
Then, if it's not working just reinstall it. And if you are afraid of it I'll try this first. I'll reinstall my Firefox in order to see nothing is bad in this way.
Do you mind?

I was wondering why the last one didn't make sense...gotcha.
Ok....I had to get an external drive for the computer so I'm waiting for that to come in to reinstall anything on the computer. I don't mind taking my time on getting this resolved.

Looking more into the computer...I've discovered that when I check under my internet connection, the computer somehow thinks that it is a "wired" connection. It seems to have lost recognizing the modem....how do I restore that?

Could you paste the output of "ifconfig" here?
Also a bit more info on your machine specs wouldn't hurt :)
