Ubuntu-Vista Dual Boot

Asked by Vishnu Babykumar

I'll get to the point,I own an Acer Aspire 5920 & my BIOS displays 2 modes IDE & AHCI..Plz enlighten me on the pros & cons of using either mode & which would suit a dual boot of Vista-Ubuntu??

Also kindly suggest alternate install methods for Ubuntu with Vista installed first coz I've tried the method of "Use the free disc space on Windows partition",the disadvantage being that if I do a clean install of Vista,I loose the Ubuntu partition on the C: main drive..Can I install Ubuntu 9.04 on another drive (not using Wubi) so that I won't loose it during a Clean Install of MS Vista..Pls help me in doing this & to specify the boot parameters for the same when asked during Ubuntu's Partition Wizard...

Keep up the great work guys,
With regards,
Vishnu

Hello Vishnu,
Regarding IDE & AHCI, I recommend using IDE as AHCI can often result in BSODs (Blue Screens of Death) as stated in this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Host_Controller_Interface#Common_problems_switching_to_AHCI_under_Windows

In regards to dual booting Ubuntu with Vista, this is a very simple process and can be done by reading the following documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

I hope that this is helpful, if there is anything that you do not fully understand then please reply to this and I'll try to get back to you!

All the best,
Chris.
