i know how you feel, i did the same thing with my Pavilion.
Do you have back up discs?
Your partitions may be corrupt, requiring you to purchase new discs. You should do a google search on your computer's make/model.
If it is a dell, then you should be able to get online tech support, or be able to call someone who can tell you what to do in more detail.

Thank you for responding. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
but....and I quote in utter ignorance, the following.

"Your partitions may be corrupt, requiring you to purchase new discs..." you say....Hmmm
I have no back up, just a fresh XP OS disc waiting to be read. I lost everything. what ' new discs ' do I need to purchase ?
blank discs ? I have those; how would that aid me in my quest ? Am I just completely lost here ?
I have a Dell Dimension 8400. I'll notify dell online, i suppose and see what's what.

Can you provide more details? :

- Did you try to run "autorun.exe" from Ubuntu? ... This won't work.

- Is your Windows CD bootable?
If yes, then just insert CD, reboot PC and install XP.
Dell rescue CD should be bootable, but it will probably destroy data you have right now ...

Good luck.

I received an email from the Dell Community Support forum that stated the following...

" You cannot run the XP installation from within Ubuntu. You must do a clean reformat and reinstall which means if you are trying to save your data and programs you wont
The procedure would be to put your XP disk in the drive boot the computer, at the Dell splash screen tap the F12 to get to the boot menu. Select the onboard CD rom and press enter, press any key when prompted and the install should begin... "

Happiness is mine ! I hope this helps everyone....

yes third eye

that seems to be a sound method

at first i partioned my packard bell only a week ago

i had many problems mostly the grub 18 message WHICH IS TERRIFYING

and tried two or three times

then i got freaked and tried TO REINSTALL xp from disk

but it cannot do that

so i tired the ubuntu 9.04 disk once more and this time opted for full install AND IT WORKED

so what you say here seems real cool

but noe i am happy with UBUNTU

so will not be trying it soon

but it is good to know how to go back if you so desire

peace shan
