Grey screen appears after jaunty system crash - HP Pavillon 9000 series unusable!!!

Asked by jwesleycooper

While I was running a graphics intensive application, my computer froze whilst displaying vertical yellowish discolered bars throughout. After failing to get the computer to respond whatsoever, I was forced to pull the plug and battery, then reboot... only to find that my screen will no longer display anyting but solid gray, and my computer is unusable!!! I NEED this computer to work RIGHT NOW!!! Please tell me how to rectify this issue (non-techincally) and immediatly!!!

I forgot to not this before, but my system is a dual-boot with Vista Home Premium, and this issue is apparently occuring at a BIOS level, as I cannot even see the grub loader... so what keys must I press to get a viewable screen?

If grub doesnt load you have serious issues. I suggest you default bios settings to failsafe and try get grub loading. If it doesnt then you may need to reinstal grub to the disk:

I can't even type anything, much less get input off my laptop's screen, as my computer is 100% locked up... I've been told that I'm probably going to need either replacement hardware, or a new laptop; as every person I've consulted seems to think that there is something wrong with either my motherboard or graphics card (the latter of which I've had minor to moderate trouble with from the start). Do you think that this is likely the case, or could it be something less serious

I'd shoot for entering the BIOS and set them back to failsafe. If you can't do that then the board is physically faulty as the BIOS is OS independant. If you can I suggest you get a BIOS update but tread EXTREMELY carefully and make sure you have the device attatched to mains power so it can't randomly shut off.

Can you help with this problem?
