Are you able to see wireless networks available to you by left clicking on the icon in the top right? Personally, I'm new to ubuntu as well and happened to stumble upon the fact that left clicking and right clicking on the same icon opens new options. Make sure that you right click on the icon and check off "enable wireless". Then left click on the icon to select the network. Hope this helps!

Also, I'm not sure if this applies but many notebooks come with a physical switch that turns your wireless radio on or off. This switch or button can be found on the outer edge of the laptop or is sometimes located near the power switch. Sometimes you can turn it on by pressing function + F2.

can you please provide the output of:

sudo lshw -C network
sudo iwlist scan
ifconfig

Thanks

You may need to use a wired connection initially to get full updates as well as get drivers for your system.

try the wired connection in and then reboot. You should gain dhcp settings.

We still would like to see the output of the commands Actionparsnip requested earlier.

You will have to enable ALL your network devices at least so you can use the ETHERNET (wired) connection to get updates.

I'm satisfied with the lshw output but please try these again and post the output in your reply, thanks!

First:

  sudo iwlist scan

Then:

  ifconfig

Good luck!

I should have noticed this sooner, missing the drivers for wlan0.

see question#74845. Should resolve this first before this one can continue.

However eth0 seems up and working. Is it?

Earlier you posted this about eth0:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1b:24:6d:bb:98

         RX bytes:1101 (1.1 KB) TX bytes:4036 (4.0 KB)
         Interrupt:20 Base address:0x4000

I'll assume you are connected to a router. Does the router have internet access, and also is the router allowing your connection (ie: no MAC restrictions, etc)? If not, can you bypass the router and connect directly to your modem? If so, then enter this command:

/etc/init.d/networking restart

Netgear..this sounds like it's an all-in-one product and bypassing it will be impossible. You should login to the admin page and make sure you're getting a valid IP address from your ISP.

I forgot you need root permissions to do this, my mistake. Try again:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Lets see the device configuration:

gksudo gedit /etc/networking/interfaces

Confirm it has the following:

  auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet dhcp

If either or both lines start with a # symbol, remove the # from each line then save the file, then exit gedit. Restart networking:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

And lets see the output. If this fails then provide this output also:

lspci -v

Ok, open the file again (if you closed it)

  gksudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

ADD this to the file:

  auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet dhcp

SAVE it, then:

sudo ifup eth0

Confirm you've got an IP address by reviewing eth0 config

ifconfig

confirm the hardware with:

lspci -v

Post all the output from the above commands (hopefully I haven't typo'd any :) if it failed or doesn't work still.

Ok, so your eth0 now has a valid IP from the router. If your router is setup properly you should have internet, if not you'll need to look at your router for the problem.

Your wlan0 is still reporting problems but thats to be expected, you are getting assistance in the other thread for this.

you should be able to try the following for a test:

ping 192.168.0.1

and you can try pinging externally:

ping www.yahoo.com
