How do I remove/disable hibernation?

Asked by george_rutkay

From the user menu where I can choose to logout, hibernate, restart or shutdown?

I don't want hibernation, it causes the machine to not work properly and freezes when the screensaver kicks in. How can I edit the menus or remove something from the system so it will never hibernate?

You can changed those settings from
Systems-->Preferences-->ScreenSaver or
Systems-->Preferences-->Power management

At the first glance - just don't click on hibernate, it doesn't hibernate automatically.
If you talk about 'Suspend', you need to tell gnome-power-management not to or you may deactivate the screensaver.

Gnome-power-manager manages battery status, events, powermanagement settings and actions like:
* Suspend to RAM
* Suspend to Disk #Hibernate dumps the ram into swap and then shuts down
* Shutdown
* Blank screen

Screensaver is in system preferences including a link to gnome-power-management.
Further settings are in system preferences -> power management
Access to several power management settings through gconf editor:
http://library.gnome.org/users/gconf-editor/2.22/getting-started.html.en

Path: /apps/gnome-power-manager
Relevant sections: actions, buttons, general, lock

I don't mean to click on hibernate, but it's a PITA because its right below "Log out" and if you accidentally click on it, your computer mucks up and you have to restart it!

I wish to remove it!

I looked at the gconf editior, wow what a mess! It's got so much stuff to look through! I gave up after 10 minutes! Forget it! Why does it have to be so overly complicated? I'm no programmer, never claimed to be one.

I just want the hibernate feature totally yanked out so I don't have to deal with it (or so I don't get a call at work from my wife who has to deal with it, she's not comfortable with computer problems at all).

Install "Ubuntu Tweak": https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-tweak

sudo aptitude install ubuntu-tweak

Or you can download it from http://ubuntu-tweak.com/downloads:

http://ubuntu-tweak.googlecode.com/files/ubuntu-tweak_0.4.7.2-1%7Ejaunty1_all.deb

Once installed, System - Power Manager .... uncheck "Enable Hiberantion"

Thanks.

"sudo aptitude install ubuntu-tweak" didn't work for me, computer couldn't find anything through that path. But installing the deb package worked. I restarted the machine and now the hibernate command is obliterated from the menu! :)

I've unchecked "can hibernate" using gconf-editor but it's still present in the shut down menu. Like george_rutkay, I would prefer to have it disappear from the list of shut-down options. Unchecking it used to work with the Jaunty, but doesn't work in Karmic. I think it must be a (minor) bug and suggest this be investigated. thanks
