wubi ubuntu fails startup after installation

Asked by 24tuccu

hi guys, first off im new to linux-ubuntu, i recently downloaded ubuntu 9.04 through wubi (i did this twice) and installed it. it then loaded like it should with boot screen. then once loaded all i get is orange screen (witch is the jaunty backround image) and a cursor but no task bar and i cant move the cursor neither so i then tried my keyboard that doesnt work neither i tried turning caps lock on to see if it would light up but there didnt seem to be any power in my keyboard but even though the cursor wasnt moving the laser on mouse was on. from what iv read about linux-ubuntu my machine is well over minimum requirements to run it. another thing i dont unerstand is that when on first installatin wubi has a little box stating insallation size the default is 17gb but on the site it states you only need 5gb space if an os is a certain size why the hell is it giving installation size options. hey guys hope you can help as this is frustrating im on the verge of booting my machine literally LOL thanks 24tuccu

I'm afraid I can't help with your crashes, but as to why it asks about space to use: Wubi works by creating image files on your hard drve which Ubuntu then "sees" as its hard disks. This is why you can't access files on the drive where you installed Wubi without a little fiddling. The 17GB is then effectively the hard disk size for your Wubi install - you can only store more data than that (sinus the OS installation space!) in Wubi by mounting other disks (secondary hard drives, flash drives, etc). It IS possible to reach the contents of the drive where you installed with a little terminal trickery, which would make the space available for certain purposes, but it can be a little tricky for newer users.

The use of images is also why a default Wubi install removes 17GB of available space from your HDD - it's reserved for anything you save in your Wubi install

MD5 verifies what you have downloaded is what is on the server. making sure the file hasnt become garbaged in transit and is complete.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

will give you the hashes

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Shows how
Just because a download completes does not men the data is complete or is ok and many users asume this. This is a very poor practice, especially for large files and very especially when the data is an operating system.

I say this to eveyone: if you can check your data, check it.

If the wubi installer you have used fails md5 sum then you will need to redownload it again.

Can you help with this problem?
