Cannot install any .deb files

Asked by YaManicKill

When trying to install many .deb files (have tried several including songbird 1.1 and 1.2 from getdeb.net and also the .deb that installs the ppa for ubuntuone) I get an error:

dpkg: unable to read filedescriptor flags for <package status and progress file descriptor>: Bad file descriptor

and the program doesn't install.
Installing anything from apt-get or from synaptic works. It is only .deb files that don't work.

Running 9.10 Alpha 2 64bit

You are using alpha software. What did you expect.

The deb files you have are most likely not compatible with Karmic as it is not officially released. You cannot install Jaunty deb files on anything other than jaunty, and if for some reason it does install it will most likely give you weird issues.

I've been able to install previous ones before on other versions. Ach. Ok.

Maybe the songbird ones are more specific. If you install alpha software you get all the alpha issues.

I have also been getting this error when trying to install .deb packages via the graphical front end gdebi-gtk, however, the same .deb packages appear to install fine when using dpkg from the terminal.

Hope this helps.
