upgrade DSL speed to verizon

Asked by grhaus

I have upgraded from 8.04 to 9.04 and all is well, thanks.
I am using Verizon wired DSL and it is working fine on a Westell 2200.
Now I would like to upgrade to a high speed Westell 6100f but Verison says they only support Mac and windows.
Since Firefox is working fine on the old Verizon, does UBUNTU have an update to the verizon connection.
All I have found is drdsl 1.2.0-1, is this what I need to install?

Its not the provider you need support for. It depends how the provider gets the service to you.

If they are providing a USB wifi or a PCMCIA card to you then you need to check what chip it uses to see if that chip is compatible or can be compiled to work. If the device they send you is a reciever with an ethernet cable coming from it then it will definately work

You will need to hunt around / call to ask what is provided to you then you can research.

Thank you for the quick response. Perhaps I need to clarify the issue a bit.
I have been connected to Verizon for several years on DSL with a Westell 2200 modem at 700Kb/s and wish to go up to their 3Mb/s on a new Westell 6100F modem.
When I connece that modem up, Verizon tells me to download new software to run at that speed. This software is only intended for Microsoft and Mac computers, their tech support says that is all they work with. In fact, I had to explain what Ubuntu was!

Is there a chance that Ubuntu has looked at the Verizon software and made a mod for Ubuntu use that would appear in the Synaptic list? All I could find was "drdsl" but don't know what that does.

I can attempt to capture the Verizon program and send that on to you.
Regards GRH

if the software is to upgrade the modem then you will need to do that in windows.

If the software is a different dialler or something the ubuntu will not run it as its a windows app. maybe the new windows software has different settings or something. I am not sure personally.

Thank you for the information. I will look into your suggested aproach and let you know how it comes out.
Some means of attack was needed and you have given me that.
Best regards, GRH

For all Verizon users, this may help resolve DSL and other communication problems where they require a re-certification.

I was upgrading from old DSL to high speed DSL and I could use the new Westell model 6100F Modem to contact them but they insisted that I download their "software" to properly use the new modem. As noted above, they only speak Microsoft or Mac, and really had no idea what Linux or Ubuntu was, so I believed that I was stuck with my low speed DSL.

My son ( Linuz since '95, Ubuntu since "06) arrived, (I'm a geezer) and noted that the modem was working but Verizon most want someone at the address, phone number to verify that this "new" contact was the authorized customer, by responding to the "phone. address, user ID, and password" that the swtich to high seed was the "authorized" user.

He suggested that my wife sign in on her Vista machine and establish authenticity, which he did on her Vista, got Verizon to to realize we were their real customers, OK'd the upgrade and my Ubuntu machine worked fine afterwards.

My Recommendation for working with Verizon - For any system modification or installation, have a friend with a Mac or Micro come by and set up your account, then you are fine 'till the next upgrade.

It is well worth a nice splash of "Single Malt"

This is the son. Some expansion on what grhaus said: this was switching out an old modem for a new one. Apparently, Verizon detected that the circuit had a new MAC address (or something), and denied service until the user walked through a re-certification process. This process can only be completed using Verizon's custom, Windows-only software. We used a Windows machine (which it also tried to reject, because Windows Vista x64 did not meet the minimum requirement of Windows Vista, but it let us continue), said "no" to many, many options to install or customize software, then Verizon re-enabled the account and all was well.

Ubuntu never had a problem talking to the modem; it was just Verizon denying service until we ran their Windows-only software.

This is not unusual. Many times these issues are a direct result of the ISP simply using methods that are not 100% supported. It makes no sense other than if you encounter such ISP's, you cancel there service and find a REAL ISP.

Technical support for Verizon SHOULD have done this up front as opposed to wasting everyone's time trying to get support from a volunteer base in Ubuntu. I would write a very nasty letter outlining the amount of man-hours wasted trying to solve this and expect at the very least a free month or two of service due to Verizon's incompetence.
