Need help with partitions and installation

Asked by otaku3230

I have a 160 GB seagate HD on external enclosure where i have already created 4 mounted partitions a long time ago (none of them has any OS) which all have datas already. therefore, how do I install Ubuntu OS on JUST ONE partition without erasing all the other partitions data. The installation method is still confusing to me because it looks like it is asking to me reformat all the partitions if i choose the entire disk 1st option and for 2nd option: specify partitions manually (advance) what should i do if i just want to have it installed on one partitions out of 4 partitions on my HD

1- Remember the size of the partition that you want to install Ubuntu in it
2- boot from the live cd and chose the second choice: "Install Ubuntu"
3- answer question untill "Prepare disc space"
4- choose the third option: "specify partitions manually(advanced)"
-------------- normally you can see all the partitions that you have in your HD
5- Select the partition where to install Ubuntu (BE SURE THAT IT IS THE SAME SIZE!)
6- click on "Delete partition"
-------------- so you have a "free space" instead the last partition name
7- select the "free space" and click "New partition", make theese choises:
      * "New partition size in megabytes...": 1.5 of your RAM
                                                                        if there is a trouble choose 1000
      * "Location for t he new partition" : End
      * "Use as" : swap area
8- valid and select the "free space" again:
     * "New partition size in megabytes...": 10000
      * "Location for t he new partition" : Begining
      * "Use as" : Ext3 or Ext4
      * "mount point" : \
9- valid and select the "free space" for the last time:
     * "New partition size in megabytes...": do not modify
      * "Location for t he new partition" : Begining
      * "Use as" : Ext3 or Ext4
      * "mount point" : \home
10- valid, select next and continue your intallation...

---------- PS: think to save your Data in an other partition before installing Ubuntu.

Just one appointment:
 In Step 8:
- If you are going to install Ubuntu 9.04 Jauty, format in Ext3 (grub is not compatible with Ext4 for / boot partition)
- If you are going to install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic (still an alpha) you can use Ext4 for / (it uses grub2 instead of grub)

Can you help with this problem?
