trouble installing "run" package

Asked by ironhorse99

I have a new nvidia driver (6-09) which I downloaded from their site.
The package is: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run
I've tried the sudo command, the -i command, the nano command, nothing works.
Can some please help me out with this. My reason for wanting this newer driver is that I have faint vertical lines on either side of the screen when any other refresh rate other than 60 is used. My monitor is capable of refresh rates much higher than this. I want to try this newer driver in hopes of clearing this up. Any help is appreciated. Mike
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit. The video card is the Geforce 6200a/256 Mb AGP.

Don't try this kind of installation. Try to install the driver through System->Administration->Restricted Drivers menu.

Can you explain. The instructions given at the site stated this method. Thanks, Mike

If you are running Ubuntu 9.04 it will be under System->Administration->Hardware Drivers.

Are you saying that there is nothing listed in the drivers manager when you go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers or are you saying that you don't see the Hardware Drivers utility when you go into System->Administration?

Using the Hardware Drivers utility is the perfered method of installing proprietary drivers in Ubuntu. However, if you would rather just use the drivers you downloaded (which I don't recommend), you can probably do the following:

1) Open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal)
2) type the command: cd Desktop
3) type the command: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run

As I said, the recommended method is to use the Driver manager since this ensures you will get updates that are available.

I hope this helps.

I HAVE THE DRIVER DOWNLOADED TO MY DESKTOP.
THIS DRIVER WHICH I HAVE DOWNLOADED ONTO MY DESKTOP "IS NOT" LISTED IN THE SYSTEM ADMIN AREA.
THE COMMAND:type the command: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run: DOESN'T WORK EITHER.
I'VE EXIT FROM "X" TO A COMMAND PROMPT AS THIS DRIVER WILL NOT RUN IN "X" BUT IT STILL WON'T INSTALL.
AT THIS POINT I'M GIVING UP ON IT. NOTHING SHOULD BE THIS DIFFICULT TO INSTALL. PERHAPS IF I FIND AN R.P.M. I'LL GIVE THAT A TRY.
