Linux for Windows virus removal

Asked by CMJ Tech

Hello,
I am not very familar with Linux operating system. I have heard from a few people that the Linux operating system does not get infected with virus, worms, etc.
I am a computer technician and provide on site computer support for home pc users. I was thinking about building a computer just for doing virus removal. If I use a Linux operating system on this computer, would I be able to do virus removal of a Windows OS machine if networked together or if I slave the Windows hard drive into the linux OS machine?

It's probably easier to just use something like a knoppix live CD which you can chuck into any windows machine and scan for viruses using clamAV - which is on the CD. No need to remove drives, and you can do it on site.

In answer to your question though, yes you could make a Linux based machine, install clamav and freshclam to keep it up to date. You could attach customer hard disks either internally or (possibly more pleasantly) slap the customer disks in USB enclosures at attach them externally.
