Need to repair a broken system

Asked by Ricci

Upgrading to Intrepid crashed, it had reached the point of installing flash player, when it locked up, wouldn't respond in any way, so finally, after leaving it several hours to think about it I pressed the off button, it went into a normal shutdown and restart, but arrives at a blank (beige) screen and won't go any further. No Icons or task bars, but if I press the off button it goes into normal shut down. Any Ideas on a rescue, or do I have to reinstall?

Boot to recovery root console and run:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop

(or whichever desktop you use)

If you then reboot, see what you get. You may have to do the same with grub and/or the kernel. but you will basically need to have apt-get install the packages over the top of the current ones until the one that is broken gets completed and you can boot. You may also want to reinstall grub if that does not show up:

Thanks so very much for your help, but no, it didn't work, just got different problems, so reinstalled alongside, it was easier, now there are no codecs for DVD. Libdvdcss2 and 3 don't apparently exist, Where do I get those from? any ideas for that.

Got the codecs, but think the installation problem was a machine fault as it continues with bizarre antics. Thanks for all the help.
