What type of broadband do you have? It is also important to know if you are behind a router or modem? In any case when setting up the connection try "using wired connection" be sure to enable networking, then click edit connection select wired, then edit Auto eth0 may also be Auto eth1 this action will open a new box select IPv4 Settings next select manual in the method section, then just add your ip settings ie; ip address netmask gateway, NOTE when adding your DNS servers Do it like this xx.xxx.xxx.x, xx.xxx.xxx.x then click apply and you should be connected.

Err, obviously you have to sign up with a broadband internet supply service, usually called an isp. Depending on where you are there may be a number of different providers to choose between or you may be limited to just the one or it's still possible that you live in an area of the world where broadband is not a viable option, although that's unlikely if you already have dial-up.

Something that might really help us here is knowing if you are writing into launchpad here by using the same machine that also has ubuntu on it or another machine you could network your ubuntu machine to and could possibly share the internet connection or are you using a frineds machine or internet-cafe or something?

David's answer is good if you already have a physical connection to broadband internet already and just need to get ubuntu recognising it otherwise please let us know about the things i asked in the middle paragraph there.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
