Support for Sony Vaio VGN-NS25G

Asked by Atul

Hi,

I want to know if I can install Ubuntu Desktop on Sony Vaio VGN-NS25G. I tried running 9.04 via Live CD, saw a login display but couldnt proceed. It said something like " Your session lasted only 10 seconds". I saw i/o errors in the log displayed on screen. Didnt understand the other error messages, plus there is no way to copy them and paste them into this bug report.

I looked up the Ubuntu Labtop Support wiki pages but didnt find this particular model, which means nobody has reported Ubuntu working on this model. When can I look forward to this model being supported ?

Thanks,

Did you check the CD for defects once burned? Did you MD5 check the ISO you downloaded?

The model of the laptop means nearly nothing. Linux doesnt care what model or make the system is. The hardware that make up the laptop are what you need to know and what linux will see. The model may help you find guides but different countries may use different components even within the same model number.

If the ISO checks OK and the CD is fine, try disabling fancy hardware in your bios (like network devices and sound as well as anything else you can find the is unnecessary to get a succesful instal) this may help.

You can also turn off fancy functionality in the kernel using boot options

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

This may help you get an install but may be needed to actually run the system successfully. Once installed you can o ahead and re-enable your hardware to see what will work / not work etc.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NS10L which seems almost identical on a hardware level to what you're using, and I've found it to be very compatible with Ubuntu (wireless, suspend and desktop effects work out of the box, and I've not come across anything that won't work as yet).

I'd advise trying a different installation media before coming to the conclusion that it won't work.

Andy

I personally find the alternate CD to be more successful that the desktop one. Its a simple text based install rather than a gui situation. The only downside is its harder to setup anything fancy (like resizing partitions, setting up fancy modules needed for unknown drive controllers etc)

A freshly burned CD did the trick, the earlier media was bad. I will now install and report my observations to Laptop Support wiki. Thanks to everyone who answered.

Before performing an install of Ubuntu

ALWAYS:

MD5 check ISO and
Verify CD was burned ok

Saves a tonne of heartache and takes a few minutes.

Glad you got a resolve =D
