AR2413 802.11bg NIC [168c:001a] (rev 01) DISABLED when using ath_pci driver on Acer Travelmate 2310 in Ubuntu 9.04
Ok so I'm not sure what happened to my wireless connection but I'll do my best to lay it all down
yesterday my wireless connection worked fine, got home from work turned on the laptop, entered password for network key ring, connected
then all of a sudden, the connection drops
no updates were installed on the system in this time
rebooted, no connection
now when i start the laptop up, i don't get the keyring prompt, wired and wireless connection in the icon are greyed out. I am able to go to create a new connection, and select the connection I normally use. It then asks for the keyring password, i click connect and it brings up the window for the wireless auth. I have the wep key in there, click connect... it tries to connect for a bit and then that same window comes up
thats the point i'm at now
the specs
the laptop is an acer travelmate 2310
wireless card is atheros AR2413 (rev 01)
i'm using ubuntu 9.04
I had this issue before after upgrading from 8.1 to 9.04 and a reinstall fixed the issue, i'd like to see if I can avoid that step this time
thanks,
Rob

Hi,
Please first connect your PC to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Run the following commands (copy-paste each line below into a Terminal, press <enter> after each line)
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install build-essential subversion
cd ~
wget http://
tar xvf madwifi-
cd madwifi-
make
sudo make install
gksudo gedit /etc/modules
# Now add the Atheros kernel module ath_pci to the list of modules to be automatically loaded at boot by adding
ath_pci
# to the end of the /etc/modules file. (Gedit editor automatically opens)
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
# Now add the following 3 lines at the end of the /etc/modprobe.
blacklist ath5k_pci
blacklist ATL1E
blacklist ath5k
# Now open a Terminal and enter the following commands to install wicd. wicd will replace NetworkManager:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install wicd
# press Y and <enter> to replace NetworkManager with wicd
# Now you can reboot and it should work.
# If wireless still does not work reliably after this procedure and after rebooting, try temporarily disabling encryption on the wireless router and enabling SSID broadcasting on the router.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Mark

Everything listed went and installed well
after restart wicd was loaded, however it was still unable to detect any wireless networks
I was 5 feet from the router, which has broadcast on, disabled the encryption
wired still works fine
i'm starting to think maybe the wireless card is on its way out?

Hi,
Are you sure wicd is configured correctly and using the right driver? Make sure to select the right driver in the wicd configuration panel. Make sure encryption is off on the router and make sure that any physical wireless switch on the side of your laptop is turned on.
Disabling encryption and using wicd and ath_pci should normally work with these AR2413 wireless chipsets...

Mark

Hi,
One more thing: make sure that the wireless interface name in wicd is called ath0 and NOT wlan0

Yea that was part of the problem, I thought it had picked up the card by itself
so its working only if there's no encryption set on the router (doesn't support mac address filtering either)
is there any reason why it would work fine since installing 9.04 and suddenly stop working? I'm going to hold off using wireless on the laptop until I can get a router that supports mac address filtering at least. I live in an apartment complex and would prefer not to have my wireless open to anyone in range.
But your help did solve the problem, I would just prefer it work with encryption

Hi,
The encryption settings in wicd need to be perfectly synchronized with the encryption settings in the wireless router. I also think it is necessary to keep SSID broadcasting enabled on the router, when encryption is enabled or disabled. In my case, this is required to get wireless working on my pc.
But you probably know this already.
So I suggest trying the different encryption alternatives one by one, WEP, WPA, WPA2....

Mark
