How to install Ubuntu 7.04 on an old Dell?

Asked by bobosky

I am trying to install Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty) on my old Dell Dimension DeskTop XPS T450, AO2 Bios Version, 768 System Ram, 80 GB hard drive, Pentium 3. I had taking the hard drive out and used it as a external drive USB drive for a few months. I just but the drive back in hoping to install Ubuntu as the only operating system on this old dell. I burned two copies of the Ubuntu ISO disk on my Powerbook G4 using Disk Unitlity to make a disk image. When I try to boot the old dell with the either of the CDs the computer opens the Bios and then goes to a black screen with a "_" in the upper right hand corner. Help!

Is the Dell set to boot from CDROM in the BIOS? Most computers by default boot from the hard disk alone. If you have used the disk in a usb enclosure then chances are it will not have a boot sector so the PC will look for one and just hang there with the flashing cursor, eventually timing out.

With some computers you can stab a function key (F10 or F1/2 or maybe even DEL) to get to the BIOS as the manufacturer splash screen appears. Then you can set the boot priority with the CDROM before the hard disk.

Good advice. I have gone into the Bios and set the CDRom as the boot priority. The funny thing is I have two CDRoms on this computer and the Bios only recognized one of them. I have moved the dick back and forth between them with no luck.

Could I put the Ubuntu files on the hard drive as a usb drive and then put it back into the dell and fire it up that way?

Alan thanks for helping me with this.

I can't share any experiences, since I never tried to install Ubuntu from a USB Stick.

Make a copy of the disk and put one in each drive then boot it up :)
