Wireless Internet problem.

Asked by 0per4t0r

I was looking at new software for ubuntu, and I decided to install WICD, which uninstalled the normal network manager. I could not connect to the internet with it, so I removed it, and now I'm stuck with no way at all to connect to the internet to install network manager. So, can someone give me either instructions on how to connect to a network through the terminal, or give me the debs for gnome network manager? If so, that would be great.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04, and I'm using Windows Vista on the same computer right now for internet.

Use an ethernet cable to connect to your router and install the app you desire. Simple.

It won't connect when I insert the ethernet cable because I don't have a network manager.

Then if you enable your install CD as a repo you can install from that.

Good Idea, I'll try that!

Didn't work... Does anyone know how to connect to a network through the terminal? It's a 2wire wireless network, with a 10-character WEP encryption key.

To connect to a wired network, you could just plug in a cable and type ifup eth0 (or whatever your network interface is called). But I'm assuming a wired network isn't an option here.

Enabling a CD will work, but I think it would need to be an Alternate CD rather than a Desktop CD.

Your best bet for re-installation of Network Manager is to go to http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/net/network-manager and download the .deb file onto a USB key and then copy it over to Ubuntu to install it.

Andy
