What is the hardware specs of your machine?

I would suggest that you check how the ISO image is burned to the CD. Do it using the slowest burning speed available.

I understand that you don't like Windows XP anymore. You should try 9.04, it's better.

I wouldnnt say better, i'd say different. Each OS has its advantages and disadvantages.

Definately check the ISO you downloaded using MD5 hashes:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

If you have a bad ISO you WILL get issues. Also as Jean says, burn as slowly as possible and also check the CD is ok once booted to (CDs have self checking abilities)

If you tried al that and you get no joy, try disabling unnecessary hardware in BIOS (sound, LAN etc) just until you get installed. You could also try disabling fancy kernel options like ACPI, APIC, DMA etc (again, until you get installed)

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

If this fails I can recommend the alternative ISO which will install at command line and can give different results (it's what I use, no need for a silly desktop to install a system)

Let us know how you get on

Peace
