toshiba laptop crashes at boot

Asked by Joseph Griswold

I received my CD and excitedly installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S149 which was running WinXP. I guess that wasn't smart but getting a chance to use Linux and getting rid of Windows compelled me, lol. Unfortunately, it worked the first time but when I tried to power it up later, I can't get beyond the user/pw stage. It turns off the machine completely whether I put my user/pw or not. I wiped out WinXP (gladly) but sadly, I now have nothing. I've tried re-installing Ubuntu but still nothing. Is there a problem between Ubuntu and Toshiba? Is there anything I can do at this point? I would appreciate anyone's suggestion-be gentle, I am not a techie, lol.

Hi,

Have a look at bug #242400 . According to the last post, the problem might come from the BIOS of your computer, not from Ubuntu. In any case, you can still add up a message in the bug report to confirm that you can reproduce the bug with Ubuntu 9.04, and you can try to update the BIOS as suggested there.

Hope this helps!

Hi Arnaudus,
thank you for your help. You seemed to have pointed me right at the same problem other Toshiba laptops are having. It appears the kernel from CD is not playing right with my Toshiba 35x. I discovered that hitting escape at boot and selecting the 2.6.28-11 generic (recovery mode) kernel boots me right up (almost always, lol) but it is progress! I got to use Ubuntu finally-woo-hoo!. I experienced the same problem as the other fellow, the battery icon indicates there is no battery, yet I unplug and it continues to run. It ran fine with XP battery/plug. So maybe I just received a corrupt CD....maybe? I shall study the steps the other fellows we trying and see if I can get this right. I really liked what Linux had to offer. Again, I do appreciate your taking time to point me in the right direction. I'm not sure how to change kernels and all that, but I shall endeavor to learn. Thx again!

Thanks so much Arnaudus (and to Mac)!. I have updated my bios version and now my Toshiba M35x is booting up just fine. The battery indicator problem went away as well and accurately reporting plug-in status and battery levels. Ubuntu is awesome! Adios Windows.....
