Change Window Manager

Asked by Saul Lubkin

I want to cange my Ubuntu-9.04 window manager from the default, Evolution, to my favorite, fvwm.

I saw a note that setting the environment variable WINDOW_MANAGER to fvwm should do this -- but it doesn't.

After startup, evolution is running and fvwm isn't. The command: fvwm -- restart&
sort of does what I want -- but some garbage from evolution is left in the bottom toolbar.

Help much appreciated.

Thank you,

Evolution is the personal information manager.

I use fusion-icon to switch Window manager. You could give that a try.

What do you mean with "garbage from evolution is left in the bottom toolbar"?

I mean that the gnome-panel shows every running program in the current
workspace. I'd like it to not do this. (I don't need these to show
-- cluttering up
the gnome-panel -- since my fvwm wndow manager handles this just the
way I want it to.

I dont know how to prevent GNOME panel from starting up. But if youre not going to use it, you could just remove the package "gnome-panel": sudo aptitude install remove gnome-panel

Hi. I'm glad you're trying to help -- but I don't want to remove the
gnome panel.

I just want it to less: I want to keap the stuff on the right, that
enable me to start programs; I've installed several of these.

But I want to remove the text stuff on the right of the panel -- each
of these shows text and an icon; there is one for every running
program.

So, the question is: How do I get running programs to NOT show in the
panel, on the right? (These clutter up the panel; my fvwm window
manager shows them in a different, much more convenient, location).

Hope that makes it clearer
